American journalist Mina Mugil Kimes focuses on covering business and sports. She has contributed articles to ESPN, Fortune, and Bloomberg News.

Kimes’ childhood

On September 8, 1985, Kimes was born in Omaha, Nebraska. Her father was a captain in the American Air Force. On her mother’s side, Kimes is of Korean descent.

In Gilbert, Arizona, Kimes attended Mesquite High School. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Yale University in 2007.

The Personal Life of Mina Kimes

In 2015, Kimes married Nick Sylvester. Lenny, their dog, and the couple reside in Los Angeles.

At the ESPYs in July 2023, Kimes announced via Twitter that she was expecting her first child.

Due in part to the fact that her father is from Seattle, she has stated her support for the Seattle Seahawks and Seattle Mariners.

Career in business journalism

In 2007, Kimes’ first job out of college was with Fortune Small Business Magazine.

She received honors for her work as a business journalist from the Asian American Journalists Association, the National Press Club, and the New York Press Club, among other organizations. 

She received the Henry R. Luce Award in 2012 for her investigation, Bad to the Bone, which exposed the illegal use of cement to treat bone tissue.

Her exposés were listed in The Columbia Journalism Review’s list of 2012 business must-reads.

The Society of American Business Editors and Writers awarded her the Larry Birger Young Business Journalist Award in 2014.

Mina Kimes started working for Bloomberg News as an investigative reporter in 2013.

She won the Front Page Award for business reporting for her profiles of business executives Doug Oberhelman of Caterpillar in King Kat and Eddie Lampert of Sears in The Sun Tzu at Sears.

Kimes and ESPN

In 2014, Kimes, essay about the “bond between herself, her dad, and the Seattle Seahawks” led ESPN editors to offer her a job.

Moreover, Kimes also co-wrote with Jeff Passan a piece on sexual harassment claims against former New York Mets GM Jared Porter.

In addition to being a regular panelist on Around the Horn, Kimes has also made appearances on First Take, Highly Questionable, The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz, Pardon the Interruption, Debateable, and High Noon.

She runs a podcast about the NFL called The Mina Kimes Show with Lenny, a nod to her dog.

Kimes served as the host of the daily news podcast ESPN Daily from October 2019 to July 2020.

It was announced on June 30, 2020, that Kimes had been selected to work as an NFL analyst for the ESPN relaunch of NFL Live.

Mina Kimes’s agreement with ESPN is coming to an end. However, Front Office Sports announced on Wednesday that Mina Kimes had accepted a multi-year extension at ESPN.

According to Andrew Marchand, Mina Kimes declined the NFL Network’s offer of increased compensation in order to remain with ESPN.

Other valuable achievements of Mina Kimes

Along with journalism and ESPN, Mina Kimes has undertaken a number of other projects.

The Los Angeles Rams hired Kimes in 2019 to serve as a color analyst for their preseason football games.

Kimes co-hosted The Ringer’s “Big Little Live” after-show about the HBO series Big Little Lies with Amanda Dobbins.

Additionally, Mina Kimes served as the phone-a-friend lifeline on ABC’s Who Wants to Be a Millionaire in November 2020, helping celebrity chef David Chang become the first celebrity to win the $1 million prize.
